Communicate your angst and win prizes in the process
Lots of people will tell you that your teenage years can be the greatest years of your life. Perhaps you don’t think so. And you’re probably right. You’ve got every reason to gripe about being misunderstood.
Not only do you have to wrestle with personal issues like self-image, you also have to deal with external, social issues that trail you - pornography, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy, among others.
You’re at a challenging phase in your life right now. But don’t feel pressured when you feel down. “Growing up” isn’t as easy as it’s made out to be!
The Star and Pizza Hut’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) contest wants you to channel that energy because we know that no one understands these issues better than teenagers themselves.
Mag Inc 2009 is a nation-wide contest open to primary (Years 4 to 6) and secondary school students in Malaysia. Participants are required to produce a three-page magazine on issues concerning teenage angst, working in teams of four or five members, under the guidance of their English language teacher. Students have to write a feature article on an issue of their choice. To complete their entries, they can express their creativity through poetry, anecdotes, caricatures, comic strips or photography.
To spice things up further, an additional category has been incorporated into the contest. Teams are encouraged to shoot a three-minute video clip or prepare a public service announcement on teenager angst. The team with the best video presentation will receive a special prize; however, the video element is strictly optional. Judging for the merit and grand prize awards will be based solely on the mini-magazine category.
Workshops scheduled for the month of March will give students an opportunity to get expert advice on the contest mechanics as well as the do’s and don’ts of magazine production. Students who are unable to attend the workshops conducted by The Star and Taylor’s University College, School of Communication can click onto our video link to view the presentation.
Contest templates will be published on April 1 and April 22. These issues are not available on the newsstand but can be pre-ordered by contacting The Star’s customer service unit at 03 7967 1777. Online contest registration opens on April 1 and closes on April 30. Entries must reach Menara Star in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, by June 20.
Mag Inc 2009 is co-organised by Pizza Hut and Star-NiE, in cooperation with the Education Ministry.
